Debating skills are invaluable in any area of life; not just in careers such as a politician or lawyer, but as a scientist defending your conclusions, or as a historian backing up your points in an essay. Debating teaches students valuable life skills, including public speaking, but also confidence, critical thinking, and creative thinking in order to create points and deconstruct others' arguments.

Debating is offered to all Year 9 - 13 students with a variety of competitive and social options. All teams compete in WSU (Wellington Speaking Union) regular competition during Terms 1-3. Premier and some Senior Cert teams also compete at Regionals in Term 1. There are other competitions throughout the year, eg Impromptu Cup, The Moot Must Fall, etc that individual teams can enter.
Debating Days:
Year 7 and 8 Debating
There is no official debating competitions run for Year 7 and 8 students. However, our Debating Captains have set up a debating programme during tutor time to support the students moving into regional competitions in Year 9. This was established in 2022 and was a success. We are looking forward to continuing this in 2023 and seeing the benefits of this programme in years to come.
Debating Days:
- Premier A and B and Junior Premier teams debate on Tuesdays
- Senior Certificate on Thursdays
- Junior Cert on Wednesdays. Juniors, please make sure you have no clashes with Wednesday sport before signing up.
